FAQ
1) How long will the Sauna kit take to assemble?
This will depend on the intricacy of the design chosen, and the skill-level of the two person crew; the first offering in our lineup '(the Tonttu Sauna) should be dry to the weather in 3 to 4 days.
2) Is each log shaped and fit by hand?
Not entirely; the draw-shaved logs are hand peeled on the exterior surface, yielding the natural, somewhat uneven surface that makes this approach so authentic and attractive—And then this hand work is combined with accurate modern machine milling to produce a weather tight and long lasting wall assembly.
3) Why is a log Sauna superior to a Sauna built using other types of construction?
This traditional form has roots in Finland going back at least 1100 years-and probably longer!
The sturdy timber walls absorb and release heat and steam in a way that a framed and insulated wall cannot, and at the same time breathes with changes in atmosphere;it is a structural system built with living fiber-and is the original natural way to build a Sauna!
4) How long will the wood fired log Sauna take to warm up?
This will depend on the ambient temperature, the type and moisture content of the fuel, the diligence of the fire tender, and the desired bathing temperature... Usually between one hour and one and a half hours.
House policy hereabouts is to allow enough time to be relaxed (and not in a rush) during Sauna-time.
5) What sort of stove do you recommend?
The Finnish wood-stove we use is very safe and efficient—designed especially for this purpose. It’s also known to be fast-heating and to provide plenty of steam!
6) Does a log Sauna require special maintenance?
No. Exterior care will depend on the finish chosen, if any, to protect the logs. We can, if necessary, recommend protective coatings we believe to deliver the best service. Interior surfaces are designed for easy maintenance and cleaning—typically with clear water and a sponge provided for this purpose.
